PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Burnout Solutions for Special Educators

Tools to Manage the Stress that Comes with the Role

Burnout in special education is often framed as a wellness issue: something educators are expected to solve through self-care on their own time. Yet the pressures that fuel burnout are encountered in the work itself. They are present in the moments when demands escalate, a meeting turns difficult, conflict arises, or a crisis erupts.

Educator preparation and professional learning are falling short in equipping educators to manage the stress and fatigue central to their experience. Targeted skill development, not wellness trends, is what closes that gap.

"There is a longstanding assumption that stress tolerance and emotional regulation are personal traits. Resilience, balance, and emotional composure are things educators either possess naturally or develop on their own outside of professional systems. But that assumption is neither accurate nor sustainable. The emotional and psychological demands of an educator are not incidental features of the role. They are central to it. Expecting professionals to navigate those demands without targeted skill development is no different than expecting them to write a compliant IEP without training in IDEA."

-Katrina Huels, The Learning Scientists, May 15, 2026

Most educators are not surprised to learn that forty-four percent of K-12 education employees feel burned out either always or very often, and teacher-specific data show a similar pattern: fifty-three percent of K-12 teachers reported burnout in 2025. The strain is especially consequential in special education, where staffing shortages remain notably high.

The scope of educator burnout is no longer a matter of anecdote, and the consequences of burnout and its precursors are showing up as attrition, high absenteeism, and chronic fatigue.

Most special educators enter the field from a place of purpose, driven by a belief in every student's potential and a desire to make a positive difference. But the stress and demands inherent to the work can take a toll, and educators are simply not equipped with the skills needed to manage this reality.

Designed and delivered live by veteran educator and former special education leader, Katrina Huels, the Burnout Solutions for Special Educators program teaches the specific, research-backed competencies tied directly to the demands of special educators; core skills that reduce the stress and fatigue driving educators out of the field while measurably improving job satisfaction, retention, collaboration, and student outcomes.

Drawing on neuroplasticity and evidence-based strategies, Burnout Solutions spans the five domains of emotional intelligence, providing self-assessments, research-based tools and strategies, hands-on activities that move insight into application, culminating in a plan that integrates individually designed practices into an educator's busy workday. Selected tools take less than ten minutes to implement, yet they make all the difference between thriving and surviving as a special educator.

The full Burnout Solutions curriculum is designed as a 10-hour learning experience, typically delivered across one and a half days. However, core concepts and tools can also be seamlessly adapted into:

  • A focused one-hour session

  • A five-session series

  • A customized workshop aligned with an organization’s specific needs and priorities.
